As a family member of a currently incarcerated loved one, when I read the subtitle I completely understood your decision without knowing the details.
The stranger than fiction reality about the whole situation is that correctional, probation officers and others who work directly with the currently or formerly incarcerated see the problems with the system up close and personal.
It reminds me of a story civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson told about a guard who pulled him aside right after a visit with a death row inmate. The officer begged him to find a way to save the man’s (or could have been a child’s actually) life.
Proximity is a powerful deterrent. Not always, but when there are eyes to see and ears to hear.
Yes! So much this, and thank you for linking arms. It is conflicting and yet, I know it is the right decision for me this year. Proximity can be the best deterrent, as you note, especially when people endeavor to make the world better for people not like them.

Life, indeed! - IS stranger than fiction. I am not intimately familiar with Michigan prisons (although I do have a friend who has a loved one incarcerated there and we sometimes discuss it), What I *AM* familiar with is the fact that the majority of people aspiring to (or already occupying) political office are performative in their commentary regarding prisons. They also are usually unimpacted by the system. You did good - asked challenging questions. The fact that you DID receive a qualified response - regardless from whence it came - tells you exactly who to support. You GO, Mom!
